When I rented this movie, my hype alert was sounding. But alas, it was a false alarm. This film is gripping from beginning to end, and its best cinematography Oscar is well-deserved. The steadicam work in the trenches and out again is nothing short of brilliant. And the two leads play off each other perfectly, with convincing performances that are a credit to their ability to throw themselves into a role and never look back until it's finished. One more thing: for years, I'd always thought Sam Mendes would be hard to beat for "Road to Perdition" -- until "1917" came along. Now, he's outdone himself. Bravo to the entire cast and crew alike.

This is one of Costner's best (better perhaps than even Dances With Wolves). Add Harrelson to the cast and director John Lee Hancock had the keys to the kingdom on this one. The Costner treatment of Frank Hamer was just as you would expect a tough Texas Ranger from that era to be. Harrelson's number two portrayal of Maney Gault is a superb complement to Costner''s strong lead. And then, there's the perfect cinematography of John Schwartzman. Put them all together and you have a truly engrossing film. Take the phone off the hook when you start watching, because the accompanying soundtrack is full of absorbing melodies that create perfect moods throughout the movie. Bravo, Netflix!
