I have a lot to say about this movie (spoiler warning).
Pros of this movie:
- Halle is literally the PERFECT Ariel! Full body chills, any time that I heard her sing. She portrays Ariel as innocent, fresh, and curious, while still giving her the small sense of fight and fire that she had in the original. Also, the CGI for her tail?! GORGEOUS!
- Also a perfectly casted Ursula. It's like they literally took her from the cartoon, and she was incredibly cool to watch! I love that they made the tentacles glow, too, that was a nice touch.
- Ariel and Eric having the same love for collecting things actually gives them a baseline of something they're BOTH interested in and was a perfect choice to stir up chemistry!
- Also, Eric having a real personality and a love of exploring made this film so much more enjoyable.
- Honestly, the actress who played Vanessa might be my favorite in this movie. Her performance was so incredibly on point, especially when the sun set.
Cons of this movie:
- Eric gets a new song. Wild Uncharted Waters has a good beat, but the lyrics are a little generic. Also, the actor who plays Eric sounds SO heavily auto tuned. It sounds more like an AI issinging it for him.
- Visually, it felt like the whole movie was missing something. A tiny splash of color there, more going on here, the ending just seemed to lack luster with the color palette and the formation. Under The Sea was great, but otherwise it just felt ever so slightly dull. Mixed with the nice action though, I can kind of put that aside.
- They pulled a live action Lion King and all the fish and sea creatures look so realistic they aren't expressive whatsoever. Flounder has a nice voice actor, for example, but looks absolutely emotionless.
The main reason I am taking off a star from this review is the song Scuttlebutt. LIN I LOVE YOU BUT PLEASE WE DON'T NEED SCUTTLEBUTT I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING AND THE MUSIC DOESN'T FIT THE REST OF THE MUSICAL
Anyways, definitely recommend you watch! It's pretty good in the long run, definitely one of the better live action adaptations!
