Scarlet truly captures the spirit and essence of Hip-Hop and rap music. Doja Cat is a musical artist that many people criticized, especially within the rap community, as being too "pop" and make statements, such as, "she's a singer, right?".
Scarlet is an open letter to skeptics and to make clear that while the artist has experimented with and embraced popular music, Doja started her career with a love and a passion for rap music. The album covers a journey of an artist embracing the next chapter in her personal and musical life. Doja herself was involved heavily in the actual production of the music used on the album as well.
It covers many themes like growth, coming of age, self-love, and embracing oneself for their flaws and all, unapologetically. It reminds me of hip hop music back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. It has the same soul and feel. Rap music has changed significantly within the past ten years or so, but this album reminds me of one of the reasons why I always loved rap music.
