I thought the movie was spectacular and the majority of the public is missing the mark because of their adoration of their perception of the Joker the first time around.
This sequel is a completely different story. It’s not so much about the Joker himself, but about his relationship to Harley Quinn and how she is just as crazy as he is.
The theme of the first one was about struggling with mental health and how society can make it hard to manage with all our resource problems. This second one is about an abusive relationship. I’m not sure where the mark was missed with the audiences since it seems to do a clear job of presenting this toxic relationship in a nuanced light.
It’s clear the Joker is not a hero and neither are his followers. Maybe audiences that were enamored with his behavior don’t like that they have a mirror to their face as Harley Quinn.
