Fascinating. I can understand completely why children would thrive in this environment and have such a hard time readjusting to the typical American life of the 1800โs. My grandmother was part Cherokee and my brother and I were very proud of that when we were kids in the 60โs. Every time we excelled at something related to athletics, or precision or endurance, we credited it to our Indian heritage. I imagined while reading this, what might have happened if my brother and I were captured at 9 or 10 years old. I would have adapted easily, my brother would have easily become a great warrior as the author describes a few did. I can appreciate how difficult it would have been to return to our very structured lives.
