I checked this out at my school library, which led to me to be caught off guard with the book’s contents. I’m 17 and queer, so I didn’t really have a problem with it’s themes, but I think the age range is too low for this book. I wouldn’t recommend anyone below 9th grade to read this, it’s too heavy with sexual themes and profanity. Plus, younger kids may be drawn to it for its pictures (which are very detailed and nice, I’ll say). Controversy aside, I don’t think this book has good pacing and was anti-climactic. I was also pretty disappointed with the ending. I also feel like it could have been longer or had a sequel to develop the characters more. I can see why people like this book, it portrays teen emotions and parental issues realistically, but I don’t think it should be accessible to younger kids.
