While reading the one-star reviews I came to one conclusion: people thought this show was going to be like the film. I for one, am glad they didn't go that direction.
I watched Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the film, the other day on Prime and saw this advertised before the movie started. When I saw Donald Glover was starring I thought it odd and said there is just no way I'm watching this because I just don't see him in an action sense.
But watching this, I realized why he was perfectly cast. Well, apart from being a producer for the show, you can see his "Atlanta" influence all over it. This show exhibits one thing extremely well: pacing. You see it especially well in the first episode with that huge payoff at the end. It reminded me of the first episode of Invincible. From there the series just gets better and better (episode 5 is my personal fave). The jokes hit so well because it's literally written like a couple in an arranged marriage that had to learn to love each other, while being spies!
And speaking of spies, I AM SO HAPPY they aren't fighting and shooting their way through every obstacle. It's not what real spies do, and I'm glad they changed the formula here. I can see why this left a sour taste in so many mouths who loved the 2005 movie.
I think as time goes on, and the trolls who hate this show for obvious reasons move on, the rating will increase. I'm not saying all the people that didn't like it are trolls, but the ratings here and the buzz on social media are night and day. I see this getting lots of awards this year.
