Uproxx criticizes this movie as missing some key facts that it considers are extremely important to the story, mostly regarding the money and theological boundaries like sexuality. And while I do agree to some degree that omitting Lonnie's sexuality hid some of the deeper conflicts between conservative traditionalist doctrine and the liberal progressive deconstruction of Christianity, I Ultimately find that this movie is refreshing and uplifting as well as providing a call to action for Christians everywhere to open their hearts, minds, and doors to their neighbors, regardless of any preconceived notions.
One could argue that this movie is broaching the subject in a way to not accidentally trigger partisan and extreme reactionary views by not focusing on the highly polarized views on human sexuality that many churches are now having to make a decision on, but by attacking the ultimate problem which is just simply rejection, prejudice, and
humans attempting to restrict the boundary of Jesus's love
I think the movie ultimately shows that the bigotry and bias we have shed In generations past we can do so without shedding our Christian identity and powerful faith. That we too can shed by welcoming the LGBTQIA+ community into our churches, without prejudice, and not diminishing people just to their sexuality, just like how Calvary chapel didn't diminish people just to their "hippie culture".
The more open our doors are, the more we can easily revolutionize the world towards a more just, and more peaceful and loving world, full of the grace and mercy that only comes through Jesus Christ.
This movie is a call to action, to inspire Christians to welcome everyone into their churches and create a new raw and powerful revival, just like we are seeing today at Asbury.
I call on all my Christian brothers and sisters to stop the rejection, you do not have to cast aside your theology, but you cannot, like generations past had to learn, hold onto your prejudices that do not come from God, as the movie said, are we so arrogant as to think we can replace or stop God In his tracks? He is like a running stream, and he will whether we like it or not, continue the story of Jesus to it's final conclusion, whether we peacefully follow the ride and help people onto our raft, or struggle to make it to shore is our choice to make.
