Some minor plot holes - but name a science fiction show that doesn't have those. Plus, I'm a scientist - so maybe I'm particularly picky. This is easily the best version of Star Trek since Enterprise (yeah, yeah, I know - many didn't like it). The casting is superb and despite this being a first episode, it was really good. First episodes are always awkward because you have to introduce the characters and you are starting from square one. This one was extremely well done. What are the obvious holes? 1) The residents of the planet reverse engineering a warp core from just watching events through telescopes. Would have been a much better explanation to have one from the debris crash on the planet. 2) Why does Pike have to live with this haunting knowledge of his future? One mind-meld with Spock and he could be relieved of that burden. 3) the kumbaya speech at the end was much too syrupy-sweet in my opinion and wrapped things up much too quickly and nicely - but, hey, you only have an hour to do a lot in an episode. Those issues aside - this was a VERY well done first episode and definitely makes me want more!
