I watched this film as I loved The Witch and was expecting a similar quality of story and menace. However although it looks the part I did not care what happened to either of the main characters. There was no story or dialogue to draw me in, and the overly lengthy killing of a seagull was unnecessary. I doubt even Eli Roth would deem that scene acceptable. In fact the seagull was the only character I did find interesting.
I am going to watch The Night of the Hunter now to remind myself what a good atmospheric, unpretentious menacing black and white film should be like.
