Lawrence Weir

I forced myself to watch 3 episodes and then I realized I could be using my life on earth more productively. The major problem is that none of the characters are the slightest bit likable or relatable. As a result , I just don’t care what happens next. The production standard is excellent and the actors are great. But the story just isn’t interesting enough to carry on watching. By the way, I absolutely loved “Two shotguns and 2 smoking barrels but this does not compare. What a shame! What a waste!

I loved this movie. I would prefer it ended around 60 minutes but I understand movies have to be 90-120 minutes. The tension between the characters who cannot say what is on their minds because of the restrictions of the era is exquisite. It was stunning to watch Josh O’Connor explain what would have been obvious at the time: I have to get married appropriately and be a lawyer but I cannot marry the maid. Said by the same actor who played Prince Charles on the Crown who suffered the same fate having to marry Diana while in love with someone else (though Camilla was hardly the maid, just off-limits). I love Glenda Jackson but the happy ending was unnecessary.

This isn’t really a review. I was distracted by the fact that Manning and Bule wore the same pin-striped suit at the same time driving together in the range rover. The colleague in the office also wears the same suit at the same time. Then later Manning runs into his old schoolfriend and he is also wearing the same suit. Why is this? Did the costume designer get some kind of deal by buying 4 of the same suits?

16 minutes in I was about to give up on this movie. I didn’t relate to it at all; I’m a white guy from England living in the US and didn’t understand the language or the vibe. I am so glad I was somehow distracted and left it on. What a great movie! Endlessly surprising, entertaining and moving.
