a poignant love story within a dark(ish) comedy. the wry, quirky humour is very late 1990s/2000s but with few exceptions nuanced and thoughtful. the magic realism popping up throughout the movie spikes curiosity, kept reminding me that this does take place in the afterlife. i would have loved to see more of the "friendship evolving during a roadmovie" plot, because zia, eugene and mikal had all well written, satisfying backstories, arcs and lines. i usually dislike tom waits acting (no offense, i do love his music!) but enjoyed his part here. will arnett's cult leader messiah king was also interesting, because the role lent itself to insert his usual mannerisms and his comedy routines but instead he chose a different, subdued approach which imo resulted in an interesting, unfortunately much too short performance.
