Without the glam visuals and crotch shots, there’s not much to see. I had high hopes for this series and was rooting for LRD and AT. However, after having hung in there for the first three episodes I’m going to have to give this one a double eyeroll and a hard no. What happened!?!? Abel is unconvincing and cringy (and no, not in a provocative way). Dude, you’re a talented artist. Why in the world would you veer off track (over a cliff) like this? Lily does seem like she’s got some acting chops and depth, but both are drowned out by the over the top production and hyper sexualization. This modern day “Story of O” could have been executed so much better. While it’s not an original theme, it would have been doable with good writing and a director that’s not jacking off behind the camera. … both of which The Idol is lacking. One star is for Lily’s budding talent and bravery (for better or worse) in taking a risk with her debut. The other is for the ensemble cast of industry executives who I found fun. The “cult” is just ridiculous. Flat, sappy, annoying performances which is unfortunate because it seems like some of them have musical talent and coming up careers. Someone please explain to me how the prices of gas and food are spiking to levels that make it difficult for some families to care for their families comfortably, but HBO still feels cavalier enough to burn over $50 million on this trash. If there’s any commentary on the entertainment industry to be had here, that’s it.
