I’ve been a huge fan of Mr. Silva’s Allon series, but this latest book is a big swing and a miss. I read Siva’s books purely for escapist entertainment; this latest novel, while having some interesting plot twists, reads more like a fictionalized treatise on religious history as he would like it to be. Then, after he states that it is a work of fiction in his author’s notes, he goes on an on in an apparent attempt to claim some actual historic correctness regarding large portions of his book. As a convert to Judaism from Catholicism, his zealous views have become for me tedious to read. I sincerely wish he would explore some varied plot lines. His protagonist has battled terrorists by the thousands, and he’s belittled his former church ad nauseum. Where is Christopher Keller, and old man Shamron? Come on, Mr. Silva, find us some fresh and new targets for Allon before he becomes an assisted living resident investigating euthanasia occurrences.
