This graphic novel is superb in what it's striving to be, and that is a modern-day epic. It's something that not only introduces a unique groundbreaking concept but a statement that humanizes these godly heroes.
Batman stands as a beacon of hope for humanity, regardless of humanity's acceptance. Because much like the government, Batman realizes it's only the beginning before it wages a global dictatorship. On the other hand, Superman only pays attention to the "now" aspects of his philosophy. Right now crime has decreased, right now the city is safe, right now I'm the hero. The allies split, and only one will come out victorious.
There are pages, that completely humanize these superheroes we've grown with and loved, namely Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash. There are two scenes I'd love to name, not really much of a spoiler considering it's a tad bit unrelated to the main subject matter.
In the graphic novel, there's a scene where Superman begins to dictate Australia, and they send a young man who they've trained for years, genetically enhancing him. Upon standing up to Superman, he is thrown and his back is broken. While Flash visits his hospital room he sees posters all throughout his room of the JLA. Before the doctor comes in stating "His whole life all he's wanted to be was a superhero, how do you think he felt when he was defeated by his greatest heroes.". As flash passes a dead kangaroo he asks himself "what the hell are we doing".
The other scene I'd love to state is when Superman's regime is fixing several global issues individually, Wonder Woman visits the middle east in which there are camps. The soldiers are sent to protect the women in the camp, but instead, they rape them at night. So Wonder Woman arrives and kills the leader, and the main cause of this issue is in front of the soldiers, demanding them to hand these women their guns.
This comic takes real-world issues and addresses them through the lens of god-like beings, and that is something special. It's not all action, these scenes spent developing these heroes we know adds depth to this story, it adds real meaning when these characters die or fight.
Tom Taylor has crafted a legendary tale depicting humanity vs Gods, and it is worth your reading.
