I don't understand why the ratings were so bad at the time. Maybe some of the storylines are so crazy that they seem rather unrealistic, but that's what makes this show so good. 30 Rock is littered with breakings of the 4th wall and roasts of Lorne Michaels, Tina Fey, and NBC, which just add to its perfection. The writing is simply incredible.
