I agree that the trailer was not entirely representative of the movie itself, but if you get stuck on that you miss out on everything else going on.
"The character has no depth and he's miserable." Thats the point!! Owen is a shell of a human being because he is unable to genuinely let himself live authentically and see what is actually inside himself.
The trans metaphor is something I think a lot of people missed that is integral to the meaning of the film. Like many horror movies often are, this movie is a cautionary tale. To trans people specifically, this leaves a feeling of fear. If you never truly bury your old self and let yourself dig yourself out of your grave, no matter how horrifying it is, it will slowly kill you. Just not as literally as it kills Owen.
This is a sentiment although blatantly queer to me, I figured many non-queer people could still relate to. Living authentically is scary, but dying miserable is 100% scarier.
To move on from that, the acting was truly captivating for me; the bluntness, the uncomfortable wheezing was brilliant. Ian Foreman was great! I also LOVE that Tara from Buffy was in this!!
The music was a big stand out to me, Alex G is brilliant as always and yeule's cover of AFASYOG is constantly on repeat for me.
I guess I understand where some people are coming from. This movie has been compared many times to Donnie Darko, which makes no sense to me cause I think Donnie Darko is a shit film lol There's a lack of understanding in me about what Donnie Darko is about, much like there is a lack of understanding on what I Saw the TV Glow is about to other people.
Also don't write reviews on movies that you walked out half way through on. I'm talking to that one guy specifically, don't be a dick, guy.
