A tricky one. There is a lot in this film that I like:The costumes, the sets,Clark Gable etc.The civil war sequences is particularly well managed I thought. But there is a lot that is I dont like either.Apart from the obvious racist stuff it's also far too long , sentimental and full of naive, dated stereotypes.
Perhaps nowadays the most interesting thing here for me is noticing how it may have influenced future directors such as Luchino Visconti and Sergei Bondarchuk .Certainly it seems to me an important film for all is faults.

I saw this movie back in 1970s on tv.I used to enjoy it but it now seems gaudy, stodgy and overlong.Got some spectacular sets especially the barge.Roddy McDowel miscast, I think, but Rex Harrison excellent. Liz hysterical rather than historical but she gives it her best shot. The DeMille 1934 version is better and lots more fun.

Overated.Colourful and hi tech but empty and inflated.

Spectacular, sensitive, intelligent, if slightly overrated, epic. Meryl Streep magnificent in leading roll, Redford and Brandauer not generally so much. Beautiful aerial photography and music too. A good rather than great film.

Red blooded, adventure yarn with plenty of incident, strong characters and enjoyably unlikely plot. David Niven particularly good but they all do well.

I saw this movie many years ago at a local film club in its shorter form. My favourite Sci fi movie and a triumph of creativity and imagination. The robot man(woman) sequence in Rotwangs lab is one of the greatest moments in all cinema and looks even better in the restored bluray. Please don't be put off by the movie's date this is a must see esp as we can at last see it in full duration.

A technical marvel (for 1916)and a genuinely moving watch. Top notch(Carl Davis) movie score and print on my bluray too. With the help with a bit of patience from the viewer this film is quite something!Fascinating also to see pre echoes of movies such as Battleship Potempkin and Alexander Nevsky.

One of my favourite Sci fi movies.Slow and serious but very absorbing and full of meaning. What I like especially is the way it engages the imagination and avoids the usual course many other Sci fi films follow. The use of Bach's music is wonderful. If you are fed up with Star Wars give it a go.
