Already 6 hours in and I am already over this game. Here is my break down of the game.
To start, the skill tree is atrocious. All of the parkour skills are locked deeply within the skill tree. Which would be fine except for this game is designed around parkour. And speaking of parkour, I felt like it was very clunky and not smooth as it should be. It made traversal more difficult than it had to be. It is as if the controls aren’t very responsive and they felt bogged down if that makes since.
The interface was also atrocious. It was pretty much menus within menus. It was hard to navigate because there was so much clutter. Very poorly laid out. I would often get confused and forget what things were in what menu. I guess I just got frustrated because the menus were hard to navigate and they gave me a headache.
The story was kind of bland. I got bored with it shortly after starting the game. But I kept on trucking though. The game play and combat where also kind of boring. I had to force myself to push through. I could only do 6 hours and I had to stop playing and pick up something else because I was literally falling asleep. The game was just too slow. Honestly all of the pointless climbing all over everything, running and jumping from one boring roof top to another just isn’t my idea of fun. Hey look over there another boring roof top. Oh wait it just keeps going. On and on and on. Just running, jumping, repeat.
Don’t get me started on the game world. The map was more littered and cluttered than an Ubisoft game. Sorry ubi, I still love you. There is just too much packed in to it. I get that the game is supposed to take 500 hours to complete everything in the game but it gets overwhelming. Especially when every ten feet there is some type of objective, collectible, random event, side quest, NPC needing help, ect. The size of the map wasn’t the problem, I actually like large maps because I like exploring, but this map just has so much stuff packed in to every nook and cranny.
I also felt like this game had a lot of pointless stuff in it. For one, the zombies. I mean you could just take the zombies completely out and it would not make a difference. You don’t even really have to interact with them that much. You can just run right past them. I mean that’s basically all you do in this game. Run here, jump there. Fight the occasional bad guy. Mostly just running and jumping from point A to point B.
There where several settlements and NPCs but the game felt dead, no pun intended. It felt like a lifeless open post apocalyptic world even though there is so much packed in to it.
But there are a few good redeeming qualities about the game. For one, the voice acting is on point. The cut scenes flow very well and you could tell that a lot of work went in to them. Too bad the story fell flat. The complexity of the world building was impressive and the open world was beautiful despite the boring cities. There is plenty to do in this game to keep you busy. It isn’t a terrible game, it’s just doesn’t live up to the hype. Nor does it compare to the first dying light. I guess this game isn’t really for me. I might try to pick it up again someday.
To sum it all up, I give this game three stars. It is just an ok game with some good qualities. A little on the boring and repetitive side with forgettable missions and characters. It just falls flat for me but like I said, I might give it another shot one day.
