I think the series would have been better if it did not have the name Star Trek and tried to be it's own thing. Star Trek was fundamentally character driven. I can name 5 characters easily from each original Star Trek series. After seeing the first season, other than the main protagonist, I just can't name 2 other and don't really care for them. The Orville also started clunky, but now is one of my favourite TV shows and should be renamed Star Trek, while Discovery should re-brand itself as a Star Wars wannabe show.
