I think this show is great for representing the trans lived experience of young people in Australia, however I find it odd and misleading that most of the characters demonstrating transphobic views are brown people of colour. As well as this, many of the poc characters are written to be shown in a bad light. For example one of the main character’s best friends “Nat”, who is a brown woman, is often shown as being a bad friend and saying insensitive things. As well as this, in the first episode, as the main character was interviewing her classmates to run for class captain, many of them said transphobic things to her. Coincidentally, all of the characters who said these things were brown. On the contrary, all of the characters shown to have inclusive and accepting views towards the lgbtqia+ community are white or poc with lighter skin tones. Like the main character’s other best friend “Olivia” who is an Asian woman, who is shown in a positive light and is always a good friend. This is in alignment with the theory that people of Asian ethnicity living in western countries are “model minorities” in comparison to brown poc.
I hope this was not done on purpose, however, accident or not this representation of brown people and having transphobic and homophobic views is very harmful and perpetuates a false narrative, as poc are more likely to be supportive of other minorities than non-people of colour, being minorities themselves. There is countless evidence that shows poc are supportive towards the lgbtqia+ community, as well as the many who have intersectional identities being a part of the community themselves. This representation of brown poc in the show makes it difficult to watch which is a shame as I think it is an important show for the lgbtqia+ community, especially the youth.
