Halloween Ends is a disappointing end to the Halloween story.
The trailer built this up as the dramatic conclusion to Laurie and Michael's story. That it was gonna be a film that focused on the two characters who started it all. Then you watch the film. Then you wonder where is Michael? Don't worry he's not relevant.
Instead the movie is like, look we have this babysitter who accidentally killed a kid and he is our killer. Wait what? Yes you read that correctly we don't even get Michael Myers, no we get Corey. A guy who has mommy issues and is not a replacement for Michael. He also has a stupid romance with Alison, Laurie's granddaughter. Corey was not interesting as a killer his motivations come out of nowhere after he meets Michael and then all of a sudden he's like I'm going to kill people. I get he was being bullied in this movie but then rather leave Michael to the killing.
Alison in this flim was a complete and utter idiot. Her choices just seemed fueled by Corey's insecurities and that she has the hots for him is forced. However, if the film had kept this to a sideplot of two people affected by death and the after effects of Michael Myers' rampage, connecting and actually having chemistry would've made for an interesting experience.
My issue with Alison in this film is that she doesn't see the dramatic shift in Corey's personality after the party. He just suddenly becomes confident but also doesn't hide that he's starting to come unhinged and she just has the hots for him, I don’t know maybe the filmmakers wanted to portray trauma bonding but it's handled so poorly.
Michael was so underused here. This man is a horror icon and they wasted him. Most of the kills in this movie could've easily been done by Michael. The scary thing about Michael isn't that he has a vendetta against those he kills, it's that it's completely and utterly random, especially if the people he kills don't even know who he is. Laurie is the exception because I believe it's a case of the one who got away.
Michael Myers at 61 in the previous 2 movies gets hit by a car and gets up after a while, gets his fingers blown off and still keeps coming. Even in the first Halloween from 1978 he gets shot and falls out a window and survives the fall. In Halloween Kills a mob attacks him and he is beaten down, but he gets back up and slays.
In this movie Michael is wasted, he stumbles around like a grandfather, hardly does any killing, and should've done everyone a favor and kill Corey and go on his rampage to Laurie.
The final showdown from the trailers is 5 minutes long. Yes 5 minutes. So sit through this movie of stupid romance and a useless romance and a useless killer then you'll get Laurie vs Michael.
