Thank goodness for COVID-19 and my inability to waste money at a movie theater seeing what I expected to be a good movie! I saw it on Hulu. This is a movie of wasted talent. Sure, Cate Blanchett is the American Helen Mirren and we love to watch her do anything. She runs through this movie with great zest and energy; believable as a great talent who has a history of growing bored after great success, she has experienced mental issues, but the story...just wasted. The other actors are also wasted in weak supporting roles.
Basically, this is a parody of white people in the Pacific NW with endless money and tons of free time who can run and jump at whims with no concerns about other people, the costs of expressing themselves, or walking away from responsibilities.
Cate may be depressed but she smiles through everything and maybe that is supposed to show her withstanding life's difficulties but it is not believable. Maybe this performance appeals to women who can read more into it but objectively it is not realistic to me.
I couldn't help but see this movie as: First Cate is here. Now she is there. She has a problem. She doesn't feel responsible. Now Cate is here. Now Cate is gone. Where is Cate? Cate went away and we must find her. It all works out ok. Everyone forgives Cate (as they always have). Everyone smiles. Cate is great.
Was this based on a quality book that Richard Linklater ruined? Was this a good movie with bad editing? Was this a good movie in the hands of a bad director? Choose one of these and walk away from seeing this movie.
Still, it is fun to see Cate Blanchett on the screen.
