Dr. Ethan Kross’ Chatter is a humorous, personable, and digestible text that helps explain the voices in our heads. His vulnerable depictions of how his inner voices have impacted him and the various research and real-life examples he lists help normalize chatter. Additionally, the examples of methods by which individuals have approached their overwhelming inner voices and Kross’ tips to manage chatter serve as empowering tools for regaining control over the intimidating flood of thoughts that seem to control our lives. Being able to observe how people in all tracks of life battled with chatter helps me to normalize when I experience internal inner voices. More specifically, reading how Kross battled with chatter from external threats and seeing how he used the tools offered at the end of the book to manage the thoughts to work for his benefit is a perfect depiction of how all humans are vulnerable to chatter and our abilities to reshape the thoughts. As someone who deals with chatter daily, I appreciate this novel as a source of comfort and confidence to take hold of my thoughts when they are overwhelming and frame them to support a healthy interpersonal relationship with myself.
