Bullitt, c1968 movie. Steve McQueen drove the exactly same Mustang that I owned, except for a few differences.
My c1967 Ford Mustang coupe (Black), was the first Ford motor production run Mustang with a 390 engine (no smog equipment) with a C-6 automatic transmission, positraction differential (rear end), with competition coilover shocks, 7" wide racing slicks (rear tires) and traction bars. It was set up to drag race.
Steve Mc Queens Ford Mustang Fastback (green) was a c1968, with a 390 cu in with a "smog" system to reduce unburned hydrocarbon emissions engine (new feature in c1968, California was always ahead of the rest of the country in smog equipment)(removed by a second owner after the movie), standard 4 speed manual transmission w/o Positraction differential (rear end), Performance-grade shocks (Tokico brand) shocks. It was set up for the street.
In the chase scene, when you see Steve McQueen's right rear tire is spinning, smoking, and burning rubber, it was because he had an open-end differential without positraction or traction bars.
My Mustang's rear ties didn't smoke because all the horsepower of the 390 engines was going to both rear tires, catapulting the car forward. That's why I won all of my races. Most of my competition was sitting at the NHRA Chrondek Christmas tree waiting for the yellow light to turn green then burning up their tire(s) when they tried to catch me. I always left when the last yellow light was going off and not waiting for the green light to come on.
Steve McQueen’s Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback vanished 38 years ago. Was found the same year as the Bullitt movie’s 50th anniversary and authenticated by the vehicle identification numbers and recently sold at auction for $3.74 million dollars USD.
