This was a hard movie to make. Was there a reason to remake the classic? Well, just like with several other live action remade Disney classics, the reason, I suspect, was purely money.
The popular opinion is split. Critics either pan the movie for being too different from the original, or pan it for being too close to the original. I cant tell you how many articles I've read slamming it for perpetuating "the patriarchy" or some BS. Well if its news for you that a story set hundreds of years ago involves princesses in arranged marriages... where the heck have you been? Yet other reviews state the new movie strays from the original too much. It seems that no matter what Guy Ritchie did with this, he was destined to be criticized for reason or another, or rather one agenda or another.
Is the movie an oscar winning masterpiece? Nah. But it stays true to Ritchie's frenetic style, while also exemplifying much of what made the original great. The cinematography was typical of a Ritchie movie, with great fast cuts that still somehow aren't so jilted they confuse the viewer to what's going on. It's very stylishly done. It's fun to watch. It's well acted. The musical numbers are fantastic. This movie is easily a solid B, but depending on your preferences could be B+ or A- depending on your tastes.
My point is, different reviewers have different agendas. Whether its something to do with having an affinity for the original and thinking this doesnt live up to it, or thinking this changed too much.. people just have to appreciate that there is a reimagination of the story available, for better or worse, and in my humble opinion thats better than having nothing at all.
