Bright Boy: The Art of Defined/Designed Black is an anthology of stories that identify what constitutes black identity. It alludes to the challenges faced when identity is handed to us from society and not found within. There are invisible barriers that exist within the foundation of our society that can only be broken down when we can develop our own sense of identity once we understand that we have the power to change the narrative of our own story and cultural identity. The stories in the book are poetic at times, eloquently written. The author can sometimes deliver a huge impact within the context of a short poem or story, showing that impactful ideas need not be stated with too many words. I enjoyed the book so much that I read it twice and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in art, design, cultural identity and diversity.
