SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW.
So I just finished watching the 2024 Crow. That being said, I have not seen the original 1994 “The crow”, so I don’t have any prior movie to compare it to. I thoroughly enjoyed the acting and the storyline in this movie, I enjoyed it a lot. I also like that they were able to portray the relationship of Eric and Shelly without an excessive amount of nudity and sex scenes that you find in almost all movies made these days. I wish that they would have spent more time developing Eric and Shelly’s relationship deeper so that the motivation throughout the movie while he’s on his mission could truly be felt that he’s doing this because of his intense love for her, but they didn’t dive deeper into their relationship. Perhaps that’s why his character was able to “doubt” her, leading him to fail the first time. For that reason and wishing they would have spent more time showing the characters back story and where they came from/what made them who they are in the movie is why I don’t give it a full 5 stars. It may have been just me, but at the end it almost made it seem like they were never murdered, that it was an OD, so that part confused me a bit, but maybe that was just me. I also would have liked to see his side of the bargain being followed through. Was he sent to hell? He did sell his soul, so will there be a second (or third) The Crow? We don’t know.
This review might be different had I seen the original movie, but going off of this stand alone movie, I really liked the plot. I absolutely loved how they made the character modern and made them both have mental health issues, as someone with mental health issues, you don’t see it too often in big movies, but their love story where they were completely into each other as if they were one being was what (I think) people of these younger generations crave and desire. Someone that’s willing to go all the way and do anything for the love of their life, that was very well shown and I loved it! Not your “traditional love story” and so many people need that- and are not “traditional”.
I think the neurodivergent people will absolutely love this movie.
On another note; the murder scene. I got actual goosebumps watching that scene, I even yelled “wtf that’s so messed up!”, if you have to go out, I can’t imagine a worse way to go than watching the love of your life being taken from you while you are helpless to do anything about it. The way they captured the brutality, love, desperation and SHATTERED the hope of that relationship was beautiful done and horrifying. It made me feel what they must have been feeling in that situation and not many scenes make me truly “feel” that. Wonderfully done.
So the crow itself wasn’t very much a part of the movie, I wish they would have shown some more scenes involving the crows and his crow specifically.
I also would have liked to know more about this “demon” guy. How he came to be, what the specifics are of his situation, how long he’s been around, etc.
