Though much hyped I found this book just that—hyped. The first few pages are promising— what they promise is a good modern thriller but then the book breaks down into a hard to decipher mess of tone and textures that read like someone’s first semester mfa notes, and turns our this book was originally the author’s mfa thesis. An agent advised author to attempt to turn it into a comnercial thriller—and the author spent 7 years trying—but imho fails. This work likely should have stayed an amateur attempt at magical realism as it was first drafted. What it is not is a thriller of any sort.
