All I can seem to hear about this film is how rich the metaphors are, or how stunning the animation is. But the storyline is so confusing, meandering, and then has no emotional payoff. I get the feeling Miyazaki fanboys dont want to admit this is a bad film. Halfway through the movie I started thinking “where is this going” and “how much longer do I have to sit here?” And then I dozed off, twice, which is something I cant ever do when watching something, somehow Ghibli managed to make that happen. I also muttered “how?” Or “whats going on?”a few times as well. There was no clear motivation, goal, or plot really.
