I was excited for the movie. I was disappointed while watching and ruminated on why. The suicide angle was too macabre I think. The show made mention of suicide on a few occasions for sure but in passing instead of making it the main focus.
Monk always said it’s a blessing and a curse but the movie never really highlighted the blessing. It wasn’t dark humor, it was just dark. The thing that worked about the show is finding humor in a disease that is extremely difficult. The juxtaposition of compulsion when danger or life threatening events would render the compulsions useless is what made it humorous. Like the episode with the dentist, he asks the guy to wash his hands before torturing him for information.
I also think it’s not likely that Monk would have lost his zest for his new life with Trudy’s daughter so easily. I felt like there must have been new writers because the transition was not authentic to the show. Just my opinion.
