For this film to receive a 79 approval rating is a travesty, especially when the latest garbage Star Wars offerings are in the 90s. Louis Gossett Jr. and Richard Gere turn in outstanding performances. For my money though, Debra Winger is the glue that holds the entire thing together. Her character provides the love, foundation, and meaning for Gere's "Mayo." Remove her from the movie, and Gere's character would never fully grow and redeem himself as a human being. The script is exceptionally well written and subtly addresses issues from childhood and their impact on every main character (except Gossett Jr's). If you haven't watched it, you really are missing out.
