To experience a slice of normality amid the hell on earth must have been monumental for a WWI soldier on Christmas Eve, 1914. Enemies a day prior and friends the day following. Joyeux Noël captures this perfectly by showcasing the companionship between enemies. The Christmas Day truce, a moment as beautiful as it is heartbreaking, stands as a monumental event not just in history but in the story of humanity itself. A sentiment of light among the backdrops of darkness. I highly recommend spending two hours to experience this film yourself.

Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western front depicts war in its most brutal reality. Remarque immerses the reader by writing horrific details in his scenes, causing said scenes to stick with the reader long after they put down the book. The novels characters of Paul and his friends are built up as likeable, distinct and different from each other. Their brotherhood is formed through their shared experience, complementing each other with different perspectives on life and death. I dare say that Remarque’s novel is the most impactful anti-war book I've ever laid my hands on. I urge anyone to find time for this masterpiece.
