Joss Whedon tried to transform the movie into a Marvel production, when it was never meant to be like that.
Marvel has done things right, they have seriousness and humor well intertwined on every single movie. It works.
DC and Snyder’s vision is serious, yeah, but also dark. It’s meant to be like that.
Another good example of how different super hero iterations can be is The Boys. Another absolute masterpiece due to how incredibly and ridiculously dark it is...or is it? In the end I realized it’s actually pretty realistic.
Super heroes may or may not be human genetically, but they certainly have human behavioral properties. They’re expected to always be right, to always be ethical, correct. But hey, they’re “human” too. They can screw up, make mistakes, kill (accidentally or not).
Zack Snyder’s Justice League shows a group of heroes who are still in development. They’re learning and evolving a lot. That Superman from Man of Steel was pretty bare bones, and barely a shadow of the Superman resurrected in this iteration.
The movie corrected all the wrongs made by WB when they pushed Joss to modify it. VFX is all over the place, but when you play with super heroes, it’s mandatory, and kinda beautiful. The new Steppenwolf is way more imposing, scary-looking and certainly more badass. There’s purpose on every plot element. You get backstories for all characters (including the bad ones), and therefore, more character development. The extra gore is just a must (how the hell are we supposed to believe someone with the strength of these guys - literally all of them - won’t spill blood and break bones when hitting enemies?). The ending feels very right, it leaves the door open for a sequel.
In the end I feel like Zack wanted to make something different to Marvel, evolve characters from some dark beginnings and then transform them slowly into the heroes we know and love so much. As someone who has read a lot of DC issues, I can definitely say there’s colorful story arcs, but the ones with the most impact are either the more complex or the darker arcs.
I seriously hope Warner considers to bring back the original plans. Even if Zack doesn’t come back they should at least respect his original vision and finally make something different to what Marvel is doing (don’t get me wrong, I love Marvel as well).
