The Good:
The Actors and Actresses (They did a great job with what they were given)
Cinematography (There were some pretty stunning scenes imo)
The Set Design (and all the technical aspects)
The Bad:
The Narrative (It's a disjointed acid trip that isn't too bad for the 1st act, but the 2nd and 3rd act is Deus Ex Machina in order to push forward a broader reflection/critique of modern American politics, ideas, and etc which destroyed the narrative flow)
The Ugly:
I don't know who this was made for. It felt like they wanted 3 different audiences (Cinema fans, political thinkers, and an avant-garde seekers)
The writing was a mess, but it reminded me of older black and white films, so a bit hammy with moments of modern dialogue.
At times, it felt like it was breathing in its own convoluted greatness as if this was based off a book I was meant to read earlier.
There are very Hamlet like scenes which I appreciated, but I'm not sure if people will enjoy it. Those scenes have the added struggle of feeling like they were just shoved in instead of being organically brought into the moment.
Summary:
It's probably going to get the same critique and Cult following the previous Metropolis got in Weimar Germany. A unique film with its own niche appeal for a specific crowd. I enjoyed parts, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. If you want to see something new and unique I'd give it a go. That said, it's definitely not a date night, family, or friendly get together movie. It's a journey.
