It’s a feel-good romantic comedy that was born in the 2000,s but heartens back to the 80s and 90s at times, in aesthetics and dialogue. It’s the good kind of nostalgia.
The soundtrack is awesome if you like hearing the “top 40” of traditional Greek ballads, and who doesn’t?
My only really big disappointment with this film is the casting of Toula’s love interest, who is the most basic kind of mayonnaise imaginable. There would have been a LOT more depth rendered to this film if, in defiance of her family’s opposition to extra-Hellenic romantic relationships, Toula dated someone with equal nuance to their character as hers, rather than a member of the most privileged group in America.
Regardless — I’ve been re-watching this film for almost two decades, now. It’s a classic uplifting girl power movie that I enjoy every few years.
