The art of story telling on celluloid is just like a wink to Kaushik Ganguli. He is getting more and more seasoned in this. Though in a different way he is ideal replacement for belated Rituparno Sengupta. Personally feel it is high time he should attempt conquering Mumbai by now. This apparently simplistic story has got more than one dimension. The love for Kishore Kumar and his songs are put to treatment on different counts. Interesting was the incorporation of eternal Rafi-Kishore supremacy controversy and dealing with the subtle communal undertone in it brilliantly. Kishore is and wil remain an enigma in years to come. And so there would be gal lore of Kishore Kumar Juniors with various overturns !

In this type of Factual Political Drama representation the most crucial factors are Neutrality Impartiality and Balanced weight-age> All three of which suffered here. 1. Only one sided view of the - let's say so called victims. But never ever any attempt to present the - so called tormentors view - let alone justify their course of action. Is their any iota of doubt regarding the importance of population control to allow the fruits of development to percolate to the ground level ? 2. Were the Muslims only subjected to Nasbandi or sterilization and demolition as shown in the picture ? Whatever demerits the Emergency period was having it was not at least communal. 3. Due to influenced by incomplete and judgemental views the balancing act suffered the most - as a result the movie. Acting wise all performed brilliantly . Only flaws were due to depicting the characters only in black or white. No gray at all ! Most surprising bull's eye hitting point in the movie was the spectacular use of the famous kawali "Chadta Sooraj Ek din dhal jayega". As if it was written for this situation itself, Each couplets were so hard hitting and expressive driving slaps to the antagonists ! Madhur Bhandarker was trying to put forward his own interpretation without any pretension convincingly. How far you agree or disagree with him is a different matter.

Apt example of how an brilliant director with a strong story-line supported with melodious music and talented star actors can keep the audiences spell bound. Asit Sen the director known for such magnum opus as "Mamta" "Safar" "Khamoshi". Laxmikant Pyarelal always delivering the best given an opportunity. Nutan always excelling in dramatic roles here got chance to portray the journey of a women from youth to aged mother with all shades of life. Mumtaz also fully utilizing the minimum scope she got with oomph glamour. Jeetendra scoring completely by delivering in a multi-shadded role in his early carrier. Ashok kumar in his own charismatic self. Nirupa Roy getting almost a parallel dramatic role. But the cake is taken most surprisingly by giant Jayant in a author backed role of taxi driver. The ultimate star is of course the novel story by Mohanbali with unpredictable twists and turns. It cleverly brings together Hindu Maya(Nutan) Muslim Taxidriver(Jayant) Christian Mary(Mumtaz) together to weave the Indian integrity. Much before "Amar Akbar Anthony"! Is it a boon or bad luck that nobody thought of ustilizing the possibility of remaking it!

Fun-filled 100% entertaining. Spontanity of the scenes with superb performances by Guru Dutt Shyama Shakila Johny Walker and teenaged Jagdeep easily grips the audience. USP are the songs by O P Naiyar all of which are catchy and melidious with suitable lyrics by Mazrooh and flexible voices by Rafi Geeta Shamshad. Master dirwctor Guru Dutt is also master of blending the songs with scenes as well as creating innovative spaces for songs which was never seen before in indian cinema. Being an expert and trained Guru Duttb keep the audiences dancing to his tunes literally .
