Ive read the book and listened to the Audio book of Lessons In Chemistry - so im well qualified to have an opinion. I absolutely loved them both. This particular audio book is probably my all time favourite.
However, the TV series is a MASSIVE disappointment and im not sure I’ll continue watching it. I now have bruises on my forehead from slapping myself with the heal of my hand. It is incredible how It is so far removed from the book as to be barely recognisable. Stupid unnecessary changes to characters ( why is Harriet a younger black woman with two young children?). Why is Ms Frask almost likeable with a seemingly collegial relationship with Elizabeth ? Why is there a beauty pageant that wasnt in the book ?
Where is six-thirty in all of this. A mere cute canine accessory instead of a major character and voice of both book and audio book. Major portions of the book were written from six-thirty’s perspective.
Even the arrival of six-thirty into the story happens in a different time and set of circumstances . And he was not called six-thirty because thats when he wakes Elizabeth up !
I think the casting is all wrong and especially find Brie Larson miscast as Elizabeth.
There were cleverer ways to have bought this book to screen, and although visually its quite easy on the eye and feels “of the time”, that is about the only good thing i have to say about it.
Read the book - they’ve really dumbed down the tv series.
EDIT:
Ive just watched episode 3 and Six-thirty has been added in as a speaking character. Nice work and that is a relief - but wrong voice for a dog. Kind of sounds like Calvin ?
