Played this game easily 100 and more hours overall.
Bought the DVD version back in high school, when I was living in a dorm. Absolutely loved it, and one day I showed it to my friends. We were so hooked, we started making our own split screen championships. It spread throughout some other boys in the school - at one point we used to go to my room after the classes and race for fame & glory... or rather - higher lung cancer probability xDD The entry fee was one cigarette per person. We had all the track names written on tiny pieces of paper, and one track was randomly drew prior to every race - no favourites allowed. Only one car for all the competitors too - Cobretti Slipstream. This machine kills, imo the best car in the game. Anyways, it was 1v1 with the winner advancing further, clashing with the winner from the second or third group below, up until it was only one Split Second hero left. The champion got all the cigarettes that went into the pool.
It's the only game in my lifetime that brought together my (at-the-time) current community (many of them were total non-nerds), blended so naturally with our other fun activities, and became part of my teenage angsty years in the most positive way.
I currently own this game on PC DVD, PC Steam, and X360 with all the DLCs.
Huge amounts of love for this one.
PS. No, no one of us has died from cancer (yet xD), and I even managed to quit smoking a while ago.
Peace!
