Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.
If you want polished, bright sunshine, colourful CGI, with implied death tinged with comedy wit, stick with Marvel, the Disney of superhero movies. If you want your superhero films to have blood splatter, untold gore, gratuitous sex, narcissism with a blatant disregard to society and authority, then go watch The Boys. Zack Snyders Justice League falls between the two. Yes it’s dark and foreboding. The score helps it along that path. There’s a greyness about the whole set that makes you instantly think, this is from the director that brought you Watchmen. In fact the set could’ve been transferred over. People complained that Watchmen was too long. But in an age where binge watching is the norm, Zack Snyder’s Justice League (ZSJL) at a little over 4 hours is a risk. But really, it wasn’t! Sit in a cinema for over 4 hours then it would be a risk, but we’re at home, safe. He cleverly split it into parts so that you could take a break from it. You could make a cuppa, go to the loo, grab a bite to eat, or enjoy a bit of intimacy in your own back row.
I sat and watched the whole spectacle unfold at times with open mouth, from the start when Wonder Woman brutally battered the terrorists in London. We’d seen it before in the first Justice League. But this was altogether less PG13 and edging towards ‘R’ rated. It played out longer too. We got to see a more harsher version of the first Mother box being taken from Themyscira, knowing the inevitable conclusion would be destruction and death in equal measure. We got to see the chain of command from Steppenwolf upwards to Darkseid and a deeper understanding of where, when, how and why the Mother Boxes were so important. More screen time was given to the major characters, and why not? It’s not as if we’re going to be sitting in the cinema, checking our phones, or hoping there’ll be a pause so we can go and get refreshments. So it was good that it was long. It was good the Snyder took his time with each character. You could see his passion in telling this story. I especially loved the Cyborg arc. A much bigger and more significant player than the previous version. Aquaman had way more lines than the first outing. He wasn’t just eye candy with surfer-like expressions. We got to know him. Barry Allen is still Barry Allen but his powers are far more significant to the story. I used to buy The Flash comics (and Kid Flash) and this felt like those stories, that he was being pushed to his limit. SPOILER ALERT:- And gone is that strange Russian family storyline where the Sharknado-inspired CGI terraforming caused by Steppenwolf, appeared to spread out like badly drawn giant worms.
We know the ending, Superman comes along and shows what he can do obviously but it’s not pretty. It’s not Marvel and all the better for it. The Justice League also get a glimpse of who’s next in the antihero chain of command while dispensing of Steppenwolf .
I could go on, not 4 hours long. There is so much to like about this film on its own merits, I almost feel like I want to watch the first one again to truly get a measure of what I missed out on.
At a time when we can’t go to the cinema, ZSJL is exactly the film that would keep us home and safe for at least 4 hours straight. For me personally I’d double that just to watch it again.
