I loved the musical, so I had huge expections. Of course Ben Platt was excellent both singing and acting, and the rest of the cast was equally awesome. However, I think the movie's message is slightly different from that of the musical. It was obvious in the musical that Connor and Evan were both troubled, but I felt they had a connection, however brief. I thought the take-away message from the stage musical was how a good intention can go totally awry, especially when aided by the internet. A good message and an important one to convey to kids and parents. The focus of the movie was more on the mental health issues rampant among teens. The addition of the song the "Anonymous Ones", hit home the message. It added to the story line in a very positive way. In the movie version the internet seems to be a weapon for both good and evil, depending on the message and intent. Both messages are important. Since a good number of years have passed since Dear Evan Hansen hit Broadway; it was appropriate to update the emphasis to be more relevant in today's society
I love it all!
Bring more Broadway to the big screen!
Sincerely, me
