Right now, episode 4 is playing behind me as I write this. Usually I'll give any series the benefit of the doubt, up to episode 4, time for the ensemble to gel on screen and the writers to adapt to the ensemble, so now your time is up Away because you have totally failed to deliver. I was hoping for "Mars" meets "Gravity" and what I got was "Knots landing" (or coronation street or whatever second rate bubblegum soap) meets "Buck Rogers". The actors put in decent performances but the script, technical design, direction and production are so utterly mediocre I was falling asleep for the larger part of the 3+ hours I endured.
Most people know that there is a delay when using a mobile phone to call the other side of the globe, what kind of a delay are you going to get when calling the other side of the moon? Oh it's 2.7 seconds minimum? well that would require some clever out of the box writing to maintain the human interest soap bubbles, why not just ignore reality and have everyone using mobile phones to call on-off planet, I mean that's just easier to write, right? and that's just the start of the technical issues I had.
If you wanted to make a soap in space, sure do that. If you wanted to make a factually accurate, engrossing, tense scifi drama, sure do that too. I'm not sure what they've made with "Away" I just know it isn't engaging, it's boring, it's unoriginal, and it annoyed me so much I had to write a review that's never going to be read by anyone else just to rid myself from the slightly soiled sensation induced by watching this drivel.
1/10 even the visuals couldn't save this mess. If you like decent sci-fi, or even if you like original character interaction studies avoid at all cost.
