I have to give it a 1 to balance out the 5's because this movie was BORING and unfunny, flat, and messy.
The first 30 minutes is busy just trying to establish so many redundant and unnecessary new characters to an unestablished plot. 3 subplots are planted which feel like a waste of time to learn because they don't contribute much to the conclusion. Once the main plot is actually established, it feels forced.
Why was the character of Delores (Bellucci) established only for her to be killed off before her and Beetlejuice could have closure?
She was such a pointless antagonist. I thought Beetlejuice was supposed to be the main antagonist but by the end of the movie we had 4...FOUR antagonists coming from all different angles. There isn't enough time to establish and develop all these characters.
Also, the characters were written so flatly and insufferable. The screenplay feels like what you would get if you asked AI to generate a comedic rendition of Beetlejuice in modern day: unimaginative, predictable, and forced.
The character development from the first Beetlejuice to now, doesn't make sense for the essence of the characters.
For example, Lydia (Ryder) would never have sold out to Hollywood, and her character was proven to be strong-headed and bold so she wouldn't have saddled up with a controlling boyfriend like Rory (Theroux) later on in life. I'm okay with sequels adapting and changing but this loses all essence of the Original Beetlejuice and it just doesn't make sense.
As far as acting, Jenna Ortega and Michael Keaton are the only ones kind of interesting to watch in this, but because they were written so poorly, even they can't make up for the shortcomings.
Winona looks like she could literally be anywhere else. What happened to her acting? She was tiredly reacting to everyone else's acting throughout the film. It was so cheesy and DULL. I can't say that enough.
I regret spending $16 on this movie. I would wait til it's on Netflix or something if you want to watch.
Positives: Ortega and Keaton are mildly interesting to watch in this,
Visuals,
costumes,
aesthetics,
coloring,
DP,
music score,
and the wedding cake scene is entertaining to watch.
3.6/10 overall
