I can't punch star buttons properly. I actually give it four stars. One doesn't think nudity and sexual depictions can be modest, but X pulled it off, giving PG-rated soft-core porn while the story claims the filmmakers are making raunch-style hard-as-rock porn. They didn't solve the conundrum. No male genitalia except for a moving shadow, and no female genitalia, either. I suspect the actresses insisted on modesty clauses in their contracts, and it drove Ti West to pull out his hair. The slashaganza gave full value for the ticket price, however. 'Nuff said. I'm a continuity freak and there were a few things. When the director stepped on the nail in the dark barn, he thrashed around and fell. Next scene, he's down, and lying in the hay is a lit utility light to give it some light. Where did that come from? Most of all, the next living beings at the farm were the sheriffs at the end. All the body parts were covered with bloody fabrics. Who showed such reverence before the cops arrived? Cops don't cover bodies before they investigate. I suppose the filmmakers didn't want the audience to look too carefully at the bloody prosthetics. Finally, Texas alligators swim toward their prey just under the water's surface, showing only their eyes. Creepy, I've had the experience. Maybe crocodiles in New Zealand glide on the surface, much more photogenic. I suspect it was an animatronic prop.
