Holy hell.
I went into this movie with little expectations. Often when we see queer media, the way it is depicted is often pandered to the patriarchy, being tweaked to sexualize or stigmatize the LGBTQ community, but I was completely taken by storm with this movie.
From beginning to end, I was hooked in. The characters were beyond 3-dimensional and I enjoyed watching everything unfold with Lou’s history. The shots were SO intimate, the soundtrack was like ear candy, and the heat scenes were VERY steamy and sexy—very realistic, too(???!!!) I really appreciated the art style of it all, too.
Some things I have some qualms with:
1.) Jackie is somewhat of a stranger as far as history, but maybe this was purposefully depicted? Her origins are left for interpretation, but we know where she wants to be is much more desirable than where she came from.
2.) Some plot holes here and there—things simply occurred (or didn’t) that would/wouldn’t have in a realistic situation.
3.) The ending—when, under such an ínstense circumstance—and how did they manage to fall under the influence?
Overall, this movie was spectacular. I really, really enjoyed it, the story was driven, the dialogue very calculated, and I’d for sure recommend this movie to typical lovers of A24 films, but more specifically—those who enjoyed the 2003 film “Monster” or the classic “Thelma and Louise” would devour this one.
