This movie, (screen play written by two women) offers the most compassionate, respectful, spiritual and moving portrayal of Magdalene I've ever seen in movies. It portrays Magdalene, a 1st century Jewess, as defying traditional expectations of her time as foregoing an arranged marriage, to travel with, support, and learn from Rabbi Yeshua. This is the faithful disciple of the Canonical Gospels, who also bore witness to His crucifixion, and she was the first to see the resurrected Christ. She became the Apostle to the Apostles, by relaying Yeshua's message of His Resurrection to the male disciples.
This is the first movie to rightly ignore the erroneous conflated image of Magdalene with a sinner or prostitute. This image developed in later Christian tradition, mostly based on Pope Gregory's suggestive Homily 33 in 591.
Also, please note the recent actions taken by Pope Frances to restore Magdalene to her rightful place in Christian tradition: in a decree entitled, "Apostolorum Apostola" (Apostle to the Apostles), he elevated her Memorial to a Feast Day (July 22); he also recognized her as a Saint; and he calls her an 'Apostle of Hope'.
