This show summed up in a single sentence: a Rick and Morty spin off that is so uninspired, that it sounds like it was created by Ai.
Disclaimer: Please note that I am not an experienced reviewer, and that at the time of writing this, there is only one episode out. The anime still has ample time to change and grow. and whilst, I was not particularly fond of it, I will still be tuning in to see where it goes from there.
Animation: The art style is bad, there is no fluidity. I do not know who the animators were, but if it was made by a small studio, Then, okay. I understand. And don’t condemn them for that. Animation is hard to make especially for a smaller company.
Characterization: The internal conflict of the Sanchez/Smith family - the reasoning for the characters motivation. and dynamics’s - seems to not play a role in this show and they say lines without any of the witty humor or personality. The emotion, i’m guessing. will be more so centered on the generic main plot, that has already been done countless times before in mainstream media. -
Speaking of character dynamics, the characters maturity seems to have been reset. They ask questions and say things as though its season 1 of the original Rick and Morty when it is not. Space Beth is there which means Time has already progressed so it should reflect in the dialogue.
Episode 1: I feel like it would’ve been better if they started with an episode that was more action packed, than what we got because the episode follows a similar pattern to “Roy” which I think doesn’t do it justice as an introduction. and if you actually want people to give it a shot. It would’ve been better if you showed the sci-fi aspect a bit more. It follows an A plot and B plot, but the plot with Rick and Summer doesn’t go anywhere, whilst Morty’s plot is all over the place.
Also, If you are wondering why everyone keeps saying that the show isn’t cohesive, that’s because it isn’t. the shows keep’s jumping from one scene to another, and it doesn’t even take a moment to explain the chaos that ensues before thrusting you in . But to the shows credit, (even though they could’ve done it more smoothly) there is a reason for why it’s so choppy. it’s the result of the plot; Ill give you a hint and its sort of a spoiler but not, because it’s the title of the episode:
“The Girl Who Manipulates Time.” And If you read that and thought to yourself, “doesn’t that completely disregard Rick and Morty’s entire premise?” You would be correct. You might find that interesting, you might not. I just personally think it’s a little weird they would do that, Especially with how much the original show mocks the idea of time travel. (If this is actually where it will go.) note that time travel isn’t the only explanation. And that there is also another that explains why the pacing is sporadic, that the show does briefly get into. But since it’s the plot of the episode, it’s considered a spoiler, and I won’t spoil it here.
That’s my review thus far. If you stuck around this long. Then damn. I can’t even do that. But thank you for taking the time to read. :)
Edit: also, I love that theres a review from penguinz0’s video that someone copied and pasted here. 😂
