A vivid and imaginative retelling of Circe’s origins and her life. She weaves a great story around the myths we all know and love and brings color to them while also plucking the relatively obscure character of Circe out of the Odyssey and making her the most interesting character in a cast of other very interesting characters. Great stuff from Madeline Miller.

This film is a love letter to the core theme of the Odyssey; returning from war to a home that is not the same. Home has changed, the soldier has changed. The Odyssey is an allegory for this idea.
If you’re looking for action and adventure, this is not that part of the story. With this in mind, I thought the actors did an amazing job and there are some spectacular moments that nod to the original text.
If you haven’t read Homer it may not be as compelling to you, but I found this to be an intimate and deliberate retelling of one of our oldest stories.
