This is a real life example of how the media and public opinion can unfairly influence the judgement of two people (the Chamberlains). These parents were Seventh Day Adventists and believed the loss of their daughter during a camping trip was God’s will. Therefore they accepted her death calmly. This made them appear suspect and the media and public ran with it. The evidence presented at the trial was purely circumstantial. Lindy Chamberlain spent over 3 years in jail and lost the right to raise her daughter born while she was incarcerated. The movie is a success because a few years after being convicted, evidence is discovered which clears both Lindy and her husband. Meryl Streep was very convincing in her role and deserved an award for her performance.
