As films of that era in Hollywood go l would say
it is the finest ever made for many reasons.
Starting with the fact that it is truly an antiwar
movie (the first of its kind and it has never been done better since.).Not anti American but a clear
and succinct non-pompom waving look at the
immediate aftermath of military conflict. The kind of conflict that takes ordinary people and puts them in extraordinary circumstances. The terrible physical and just as debilitating mental
toll it takes. Hollywood had never tackled those
issues on such a down to earth every man and
every woman level. The cast is superb.
